Krugersdorp is located in the West Rand of Gauteng founded in 1887 to fulfil the need for a mining town east of the Witwatersrand. The town was named after Paul Kruger, the Transvaal President at the time. In 1952, the West Rand Consolidated Mine was the first in the world to extract Uranium as a byproduct of the gold refining process. Today, manganese, iron, abestos and lime are also mined.
Nearby Krugersdorp is Kromdraai named "Crooked Turn" after a kink in the meadering Crocodile River. It is a protected conservancy of untouched beauty and archaeological significance.
Today Krugersdorp is still a gold mining city although other minerals are also mined in the area including manganese, asbestos and lime. There are a number of schools in the area and the city supports two nearby townships.
Thanks to its unique location, Krugersdorp offers not only the perfect city experience to visitors but also allows visitors to the more rural side of things. On the city side of things tourists can experience the city’s malls, shopping centres and night life, as well as an 18-hole golf course. The 1400 hectare game reserve located nearby allows visitors to get close to nature without having to venture very from the city at all. There are also several other game reserves in the area, as well as a bird sanctuary, the nearby Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Caves.
